Everything You Need to Know for a Stress-Free Immigration Physical

Everything You Need to Know for a Stress-Free Immigration Physical

Navigating the path to permanent residency in the United States is an exciting journey, but completing the required paperwork can sometimes feel overwhelming. One of the most important steps in this process is your immigration physical.

At One Health Medical Care in Reston, Virginia, Mingliarti Tjahjana, MD, and our team are here to make this step as smooth and worry-free as possible. Serving families and individuals throughout Reston, Herndon, Sterling, and the surrounding Northern Virginia areas, we know the unique requirements of Form I-693, and are here to help you prepare with confidence.

Who can perform your immigration physical?

Only a designated civil surgeon authorized by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can perform your official immigration physical. You cannot use your regular primary care doctor for this exam unless they hold this specific federal designation.

The immigration exam is not a standard wellness checkup. Instead, it’s a highly targeted public health screening designed to identify specific conditions of public health significance.

As a certified civil surgeon, Dr. Tjahjana is specifically trained to navigate these strict federal guidelines, ensuring your paperwork is filled out correctly the first time to avoid costly application delays.

What happens if you’re missing vaccination records?

If you’re missing your childhood vaccination records, you don’t need to worry about an automatic application denial. We can easily perform simple blood tests to prove your existing immunity, or administer any required catch-up vaccines right here during your visit.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) allows civil surgeons to use laboratory blood tests, known as titers, to verify your immunity to diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella. If you do need a vaccine, we can administer it during your appointment.

Additionally, the immigration guidelines frequently update to reflect current health standards; for example, the COVID-19 vaccine requirement was completely removed from the Form I-693 process starting in January 2025, making your preparation even simpler.

How can you make your appointment less stressful?

You can simplify your immigration physical visit by preparing your documents in advance. Knowing what to expect can make a significant difference.

It’s completely natural to feel nervous about blood draws or medical exams. To help ease your mind, you can practice extended-exhalation diaphragmatic breathing. This technique involves inhaling deeply for four seconds and exhaling slowly for eight seconds.

This simple breathing pattern actively stimulates your vagus nerve, lowers your heart rate, and helps prevent somatic anxiety so you can feel relaxed and comfortable throughout your visit.
